A label gives you a name. A fabric can tell you how the whole thing began. To understand Stone Island’s starting point, it helps to look past the badge and spend a moment with Tela Stella.
Start with the material.
In its account of Stone Island’s origins, Moncler Group dates the first collection to 1982 and credits Massimo Osti. The starting material was a rigid, two-sided, two-tone truck tarpaulin. Heavy stonewashing transformed it into Tela Stella: a cloth intended to evoke waxed jackets weathered by sun and sea. Military uniforms informed the collection, and the Wind Rose badge was applied to the garments.

A treatment becomes a point of view.
That is the detail we keep coming back to: the character of the garment was being developed through what happened to the fabric. Read this way, the treatment belongs in the story alongside the cut and the label. It asks a more interesting question than whether something looks old: what process gave it that particular surface, weight, or attitude?
Keep the original reference close.
Stone Island’s own archive lists the 45402 Tela Stella in its Spring/Summer 1982 selection. The same archive lets readers follow later experiments through materials such as thermosensitive fabric, reflective cloth, and metal shells. Those dated entries provide a useful route through the brand’s material history.
What we take into our archive.
For us, a good reference record connects a piece to a model, a season, a material, and a source that can be revisited. A close photograph can preserve the texture; an original record helps explain it. The two become more useful together. That is the kind of context we want to keep attached to the clothes as they find their next owner.
Sometimes the most important detail is what happened to the fabric before anyone wore it.
Keep the references.
